Boro can play major role in title race

MIDDLESBROUGH manager Steve McClaren is aware his resurgent team can play a key role in the destination of the Premiership title.

Boro can play major role in title race

McClaren is relishing the challenge of a home game with Arsenal but is undecided over who will be declared champions.

The former number two to Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford said: “There will be many twists and turns in the final games. The team that holds its nerve the most will come out on top. It is a question of handling pressure.

“I will not turn to my old boss at Manchester United for advice on how to beat Arsenal.

“We will formulate our own game plan. It is a tremendous opportunity for my players to test their ability against another top team. We have a terrific record at home this season. We have beaten Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Liverpool, and played some fantastic football.

“We have nothing to fear against Arsenal. Top teams know there are no easy games at the Riverside Stadium.

“My players will enjoy the spotlight. We are on an unbeaten eight-match run and hope to beat our previous highest Premiership total of 52 points.

“We have shown tremendous character and with that we have achieved consistency.”

McClaren has a healthy respect for Arsenal, however.

“They have talent and pace all the way in their squad,” he added. “Their teams have shown character over the years and you need that to maintain a title challenge. Character and resilience are vital. McClaren believes Ferguson is relishing the challenge of big-pressure games.

“You could see that in his reaction after the midweek match at Arsenal,” he added. Middlesbrough have lost only one home game this season, against Aston Villa, and are determined to seek revenge for a 2-0 Highbury defeat in December.

The game may come too early for George Boateng to return and Brazilian star Doriva could again deputise for the former Aston Villa player. Michael Ricketts could be in the squad after recovering from an Achilles injury.

The former Bolton Wanderers striker is anxious to get off the mark following his January move but he may have to be content with a place on the bench.
