No Scholes the Real worry for Fergie

IF Manchester United’s latest league win has sent them into their Old Trafford showdown with Real Madrid in confident mood, it also emphasised how difficult it will be trying to cope without the influence of suspended Paul Scholes.

No Scholes the Real worry for Fergie

The quiet man of Old Trafford has always preferred to stay in the shadows, while his youth-team contemporaries David Beckham and Ryan Giggs have hogged the limelight.

One only wonders just how many products Scholes would have the opportunity to endorse if he had tried to set himself up as a fashion icon instead of a family man.

In pure talent, he has no peer among Alex Ferguson’s current title-chasing squad. Beckham may have the style, but it is Scholes who provides the substance.

The pair cemented their respective roles again in the 3-1 win over Blackburn, which kept United three points clear of Arsenal in a championship chase which is now certain to go down to the final week, if not the final day and the final goal.

While it was Beckham who delivered the exquisite curling cross which set up Ruud van Nistelrooy’s 38th goal of an incredible campaign, Scholes was the man who bailed his team-mates out of trouble, smashing United back in front before half-time after Old Trafford old boy Henning Berg had nodded Rovers level, then bundling home his 100th goal for the club from close range after van Nistelrooy had turned provider.

“When I was at school, if someone had told me I was even going to play for United, let alone score 100 goals I wouldn’t have believed them,” said Scholes.

“I am really enjoying myself at the moment and I have scored more times this season than any other. It’s a nice milestone to reach and hopefully there will be many more to come.”

The pity for United is that none of them can come against the Spanish giants on Wednesday.

After starting to look more comfortable in his role behind van Nistelrooy this season, Scholes is revelling in the greater freedom afforded by a slightly deeper role, with Giggs given responsibility for providing the prolific Dutchman with more attacking support.
