JJ Hanrahan is set for a return to Munster next season, the Irish Examiner understands.

The 32-year-old Connacht fly-half from Kerry is believed to have signed a two-year contract to return to his native province for the second time in his career.

Hanrahan last month returned from a nine-month absence following a serious knee injury which prompted Connacht to sign former All Black playmaker Josh Ioane but the Kerryman will be out of contract at the end of the season and is now set for a third stint with Munster.

He initially left Munster for Northampton Saints after 64 appearances in red in 2015 before re-signing two years later and playing a further 77 times for the province.

Hanrahan's second foray overseas began in 2021 and took the playmaker to France's Top 14 with Clermont and then there's Dragons in Wales before he returned to Ireland in 2023.

Hanrahan's arrival back in Munster will see him join Ireland international Jack Crowley and academy graduate Tony Butler as the senior fly-halves for whoever the province appoints as its next permanent head coach while Billy Burns' future beyond this season is yet to be determined, publicly at least.
