Joe Schmidt to be named next Wallabies head coach - reports
JOE SHOW: Former Ireland head coach.
Australian Rugby chiefs will name Joe Schmidt as Eddie Jones' successor in the coming days, according to reports Down Under.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports today that 'only the paperwork had to be finalised before Schmidt was announced.'
Schmidt, who coached Ireland from 2013 to 2019, will again link up with outgoing IRFU high performance director David Nucifora, who is returning to his home country for a role with Australian Rugby.
That relationship may have been key to Australia luring Schmidt from New Zealand; Schmidt was part of Ian Foster's backroom team which. Together they led the All Blacks to last year's World Cup final, where they were ultimately beaten by the Springboks.
Schmidt masterminded three Six Nations championship wins -- including a Grand Slam -- while in charge at Lansdowne Road and oversaw a historic win over New Zealand, which helped propel the country to the world's top ranking.
The Wallabies will aim to rebound from a terrible showing in France, where they failed to progress from the pool under Jones.
