Hard conversation key to All Black growth

Joe Schmidt wasn’t the only man ushered in to a new-look All Black coaching staff after the historic series loss to Ireland last year and the fallout that left head man Ian Foster clinging on to his job.
Jason Ryan made the step up from the Crusaders as Foster reshuffled his backroom staff and both men have manufactured clear and obvious improvements in the 16 months since.
Schmidt has taken on an attacking brief and his attention to detail was lauded again yesterday by Aaron Smith and Rieko Ioane, who remain two of the main men in that back line.
“I think for us, trying to find those one per centers can be quite hard, but with Joe, he makes the view of the game a lot easier by the way he understands it," said Ioane.
"Yeah, he has definitely helped us quite a bit.”
Ryan has attracted far less interest from the media since his move up the coaching ladder in mid-2022 but he has made his own imprint on the pack and he was happy to pinpoint the improvements when asked.
“We've had some good growth in our lineout, both sides of the ball. That's been a plus for us and definitely, the training quality and fixing things on the run has been quite a step up for the boys, and just not avoiding any hard conversations that need to be had.
“That's a big one for us. The players have been tremendous and responded and we're where we need to be, to be fair. So we're happy with the progress and how that's come along in a couple of areas, and our carries have been good as well.”
Another major factor in all this has been the new faces drafted into the squad and those others handed new positions and roles. Among the most important in that sense has been the promotion of props Ethan De Groot and Tyrel Lomax.
De Groot is back available this week after serving a two-match suspension in the pool phase while the news on Lomax was more encouraging yesterday after the tighthead damaged a knee in last Thursday’s defeat of Uruguay.
“He's trained really well today, got through what he needed to and definitely he'll be considered for selection,” said Ryan.
