England flanker Tom Curry has been suspended for two matches for his red card he received in their opening Rugby World Cup game against Argentina in Marseille on Saturday.Â
Curry attended an independent Disciplinary Committee hearing today for an offence contrary to Law 9.13 (dangerous tackle) after a review by the Foul Play Review Official in England's Pool D game.
The independent Disciplinary Committee was chaired by Adam Casselden SC (Australia) and was joined by former players John Langford (Australia) and Jamie Corsi (Wales).
Curry accepted that foul play occurred and that the offence warranted a red card. The Committee noted the offence carried a mandatory minimum mid-range sanction (six matches) and after considering mitigating factors, including admission of foul play and the correctness of the red card at the first opportunity, an exemplary disciplinary record, an apology to the player and good character, a reduced sanction by the maximum mitigation of 50 per cent.Â
The final sanction of three matches are to be applied as follows:
England v Japan, September 17
England v Chile, September 23
England v Samoa, October 7 - Curry will be free to play in this game subject to him successfully completing the Coaching Intervention Programme.
Curry has the right to appeal within 48 hours of the issuing of the full written decision.Â
