The incoming Ireland defence coach will work with the province for the next four months as they attempt to reverse a worrying slide in form.

Farrell is unable to start working with the Ireland squad until after this year's Six Nations, but will take-on a part-time advisory role with Munster. This will also give him the chance to work with a number of Irish internationals.

The former rugby league star, who was part of England's coaching ticket for their 2015 World cup campaign, can't work with an international team during the Six Nations as part of his gardening leave; however he can work with clubs.

The reds have struggled in recent weeks losing 5 of their last 6 matches and speaking before the appointment was made ex Munster, Leinster and Ireland forward Trevor Hogan recognised that head coach Anthony Foley could do with some assistance but should not be rushed out of his job.

When Farrell’s role was announced Munster chief executive Garrett Fitzgerald said: “We have been looking for additional support for our coaching staff.

“And with the timely availability of an experienced coach such as Andy Farrell, we felt his inclusion would be hugely-beneficial in assisting our coaching team.”
