Munster's Damien Varley retires on medical grounds

Munster Rugby today announced that hooker Damien Varley is retiring because of injury.

The 31-year-old has been struggling to fully rehabilitate a foot injury sustained in training in July 2013.

Varley only made one appearance in the current season, against Leinster in October. He continued to work on his recovery, but has been been advised to retire on medical grounds.

The hugely popular Limerick man made 131 appearances for Munster in his career, and also has three Irish caps.

The player said he was saddened to be leaving the sport.

"It is with great sadness that I have to announce my premature retirement,” Varley said.

“Like so many before me I will look back at my time in Munster with immense pride and fondness, not only for the sport, but for the people that I have played with, worked with and the friendships I have made.

"I am privileged to have represented my province and country and I am hugely thankful for all the memories, and for the support I have received throughout my career.

Tributes have been pouring in for the player.
