Trimble knows Bowe threatens place in Schmidt's plans
Andrew Trimble knows he has to empty the tank this Saturday in the RBS Six Nations if he wants to stay in Joe Schmidt's plans.
He has been retained in an Ireland starting 15 for the fourth time in a row, a first for the Ulsterman, as Ireland get set to host Italy at the Aviva Stadium.
Trimble says he has to keep playing at his best as his Ulster team-mate Tommy Bowe is getting back to full fitness.
Bowe scored twice for his province on his return from injury in their Pro 12 win over Dragons last weekend.
Bowe did not return for the second half as he felt tightness on a troublesome groin injury.
Although he's been following back to play protocols in Belfast, Bowe turned up for training today at Carton House.
Trimble says Bowe's return to action may put his position in the Ireland squad under threat.
He said: "I was watching the Ulster game at the team room at Ravenhill and all the boys were giving me a hard time, saying it was good while it lasted."
"Obviously I'm a good mate of Tommy's, so I am delighted to see him get back in there (though) not so delighted to see him score twice in 30 minutes."
"I thought he'd be tempted to see if he could stay on and get the hat-trick but good to see him getting out there and doing well."
"From my point of view, all I can do it just go out there and put in a big performance and we will see what happens but to me there is no surprise to see there is competition for places."
"Whenever you look at the amount of guys, there would be a few injured but when everyone is fit, you know there are seven or eight quality wingers and to be in the top two you need to be playing out of your skin." Trimble said.
