Murphy undergoes hernia op

Leicester Tigers captain Geordan Murphy should be fit for the start of the Guinness Premiership season despite undergoing a hernia operation.

The Ireland utility back, who was on Monday named in Declan Kidney’s squad for next week’s training camp in Limerick, could be out of action for up to a month.

However, Tigers boss Richard Cockerill is hopeful that Murphy will be available for his side’s league opener against Sale Sharks on September 4.

"Geordy should be ready for the start of the season," he is quoted as saying by the Leicester Mercury.

"He has had a minor operation to repair a little hernia. That usually requires three to four weeks' recovery time, which would put him in the frame for Sale.

“It could be a week earlier, it could be a week later. Hopefully, he will be right.”
