Fans could make the difference, says Bergamasco
Mirco Bergamasco believes the Italian fans will have a huge role to play in tomorrow's RBS Six Nations game against Ireland at the Stadio Flaminio.
The Azzurri, looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance in their 36-11 defeat to England in their opener last weekend, hope to upset the odds and claim the scalp of the Irish.
Almost 30,000 home fans are expected to turn out and Italy centre Bergamasco reckons their energy could inspire the team to a famous victory.
"I am touched by the affection that the fans are displaying to us and I cannot wait to play Sunday's game," said the 25-year-old.
"Despite our defeat against England, the fans have continued to support us this week with so much passion.
"They have written emails, they have encouraged us and we must reward them with a fine performance."
Italy face a huge task against an Ireland team heading into the encounter in the Eternal City in buoyant mood following their 30-21 home triumph over France last Saturday.
"This is the type of game one wants to play, especially in front of 30,000 fans," said Bergamasco.
"But this game will be extremely difficult for us.
"We know that in Paddy Wallace and Brian O'Driscoll, Ireland have very strong centres.
"Ireland are playing better than England."
The Stade Francais player knows Italy will have to play a perfect game to surprise Declan Kidney's side - something they failed to do at Twickenham.
"Against England, our defence did well but the rest of the team was below par," said Bergamasco.
"We gave away four tries and we don't want this to happen against Ireland.
"We will have to play more ball-in-hand plays and just kick just for the sake of it.
"We have a plan of attack and we will respect it."
The Italians will be without Andrea Marcato and Marco Bortolami, who have failed to recover from injuries sustained against England.
