Smith denies Ireland link

New Zealand assistant coach Wayne Smith has rubbished reports linking him with the Ireland vacancy.

Smith is thought to be in the frame to replace Eddie O’Sullivan, who resigned earlier this month following his side’s worst-ever finish in the RBS 6 Nations Championship.

But Smith has denied discussing the role with anyone from the IRFU.

“I’ve never been contacted by anyone and nor have I contacted anyone. I am categorically not in for the job,” he told The Sunday News.

“Steve Tew (New Zealand Rugby chief) mentioned it to me and it came as a bit of a shock to be rung and told in the first place.

“Someone has just manufactured a story.”
