South Africa coach Jake White has handed 20-year-old full-back Francois Steyn a starting berth at inside centre for Saturday’s World Cup warm-up match against Scotland.

Steyn, who has previously come on as a wing and fly-half in Test rugby, will get at least half an hour in the position alongside Butch James at fly-half and Jaque Fourie at outside centre.

Danie Rossouw returns to the number eight spot after recovering from a niggling injury while regular skipper John Smit continues to miss out with a hamstring problem.

Victor Matfield will captain the side, with Gary Botha at hooker.

Percy Montgomery, who is in at full-back, needs 11 points on Saturday to become the first Springbok to score 100 career points against Scotland.

Meanwhile, winger Akona Ndungane has been flown back to South Africa to receive medical treatment after picking up an injury in Tuesday’s game against Connacht.

South Africa team to face Scotland:

P Montgomery; JP Pietersen, J Fourie, F Steyn, B Habana; B James, F du Preez; O du Randt, G Botha, CJ van der Linde, B Botha, V Matfield (captain), S Burger, J Smith, D Rossouw.

Replacements: B du Plessis, BJ Botha, A van den Berg, W van Heerden, R Pienaar, A Pretorius, A Willemse.
