Tommy Cregan went from hero to villain as he missed a late conversion to win Buccaneers a cracking derby tie at Crowley Park today.

Cregan watched on in agony as his conversion attempt of David Kelly’s 79th-minute try bounced back off the post.

A sweet reverse pass from Paddy O’Toole put ‘Wegians scrum half Luke Stringer over for the opening try after 10 minutes. The host led 8-6 at the break with Buccs full-back Cregan booting two penalties.

John Cleary and Cregan, who ended with 13 points, then swapped tries before inspirational back rower Kelly was mauled over late on.

Scorers:

Galwegians: Tries: Luke Stringer, John Cleary; Con: Paddy O’Toole; Pens: Nick Wakley, Peter Durcan

Buccaneers: Tries: Tom Cregan, David Kelly; Con: Cregan; Pens: Cregan 2
