WRU to probe Johnson's future plans

The Welsh Rugby Union have admitted they are already considering contingency plans to find a replacement for caretaker coach Scott Johnson if the Australian returns Down Under.

The Welsh Rugby Union have admitted they are already considering contingency plans to find a replacement for caretaker coach Scott Johnson if the Australian returns Down Under.

Johnson took charge of Wales on a three-match basis following the controversial departure of Grand Slam-winning coach Mike Ruddock.

However, speculation is rife that the 43-year-old will join former Bath boss John Connolly on the Wallabies coaching set-up after the RBS 6 Nations Championship.

Newly-appointed Australia supremo Connolly is understood to be planning a meeting with Johnson on a flying visit to Britain, having reportedly targeted him for a place in his coaching team alongside current Bath assistant Michael Foley.

Johnson also has pressing family issues to contend with in Australia, which look likely to speed up a return Down Under later this month following Wales’ final Six Nations games against Italy and France.

WRU chairman David Pickering told the Daily Mail: “We have asked our chief executive, Steve Lewis, to explore Scott’s position and report back to the board after the final match. If that’s not a goer, we will look to replace him and scour for the best coach.

“Scott has made us aware of his family situation. That is an issue and, understandably, a major priority.”
