SRU to discuss Williams' future
The Scottish Rugby Union board will meet tomorrow to discuss the future of coach Matt Williams.
Having completed their review of a poor RBS 6 Nations, which has included seeking players’ opinions on where things went wrong, the Murrayfield chiefs are in a position make decisions.
Many of the nation’s rugby fans and a number of high-profile former players hold Williams responsible for a disappointing campaign which saw Scotland win just one game – against Italy – and they have not been shy in calling for his head.
The Australian remains defiant in the face of criticism which has mounted since he took over from Ian McGeechan in December 2003 but he must be worried that his tenure has just hours to run.
The SRU were giving little away today but a spokesperson said: “There is a board meeting tomorrow.
“We have been conducting a review of the Six Nations campaign in terms of information gathering.
“That is now complete and what is happening now is that they will be assimilating the information gathered and going into assessing it tomorrow.
“I don’t know precisely what will happen or what will be said but a number of issues are certain to feature.”
Williams, who has two years remaining on his contract, has endured a troublesome 17 months at the helm during which his side has won just three Test matches out of 17.
Last year he suffered a Six Nations whitewash and only averted another this term with an insipid 18-10 win over Italy, either side of which his team slumped to record defeats to Ireland and Wales.
The pressure has heightened on Williams with current players stating they had lost faith in his management and were considering joining Tom Smith in retirement from representing Scotland, or leaving Scottish clubs.
