Payne will be rooting for his Irish team-mates
Shaun Payne could be forgiven if he felt even a tiny bit of divided loyalty when Ireland take on South Africa in Saturday’s crucial Second Test match in Cape Town.
Munster star Payne was born in South Africa and qualifies to play for Ireland through his Sligo-born grandmother.
Gordon D’Arcy’s severe groin strain finally paved the way for Payne’s long-awaited call-up to the Irish senior squad and Payne was asked to join the Irish squad.
Payne is outside the 22-man match squad for the Second Test, although any late injuries to any of the selected backs would almost certainly see the South African native come into the equation.
“I was actually surprised to get the call-up,” says the 32-year-old who took part in a few training sessions during the Warren Gatland era.
“There was a bit of back-up in the squad already and there was only one injury with Gavin Duffy and Tyrone Howe there,” he told the Evening Echo.
Payne believes the outcome of Saturday’s clash at Newlands is difficult to call.
“Ireland have a lot less pressure on them this time around and South Africa may even head into the game a bit complacent. I think it’s going to be very evenly balanced.
“Ireland have had a good look at South African now as they were very much a new entity last time round.
“I definitely hope Ireland win.”
