Warriors put into liquidation

Celtic Warriors have been put into liquidation by the Welsh Rugby Union.

WRU Group chief executive David Moffett met with members of staff today to tell them that a resolution had been passed last Friday, meaning the club has no future.

Warriors finished fourth in the Celtic League this season but it is off the pitch where they have struggled.

The club’s players have already been speaking to the WRU about securing their futures with other regions.

Their demise leaves just four regions in Wales – the Cardiff Blues, Neath-Swansea Ospreys, Gwent Dragons and Llanelli Scarlets.

It is hoped having one less region will make Welsh clubs more competitive but there are big concerns about the future of rugby in the Bridgend and the Valleys areas.

Moffett said: “The staff were the first to be told the news that the Celtic Warriors had been placed into liquidation. I would like to thank the players and the staff for their efforts on behalf of the Warriors over the past season.

“While it is a regrettable decision, the company is not in a position to continue. The debtors far outweigh the creditors and there is simply no money left in the company with which to continue paying the wages of the staff.”
