UCD's defensive frailties showed up again as Carlow ran in six tries, with centre Ian Dwyer claiming two in a 34-19 win for the visitors at the Belfield Bowl.

There was little to play for but pride with both sides stranded in mid-table, but the 13-try haul ran in during their 2001 meeting was almost matched.

Flanker David Cox was freed for the first after seven minutes, before UCD and Connacht back row Tom Carter ran through slack Carlow tackling for two tries on 16 and 34 minutes.

Leinster U21 Conor Sharpe converted one and added the extras to former Shannon back Niall McNamara's late effort as UCD closed the half 19-15 in front, with Carlow out-half Ben Young and centre Tom Bonnefoy completing the visitors' scoring.

That was as good as it got for the Students, as four minutes after the restart Dwyer took scrum-half Dan van Zyl's offload to score out wide for a 22-19 lead.

UCD gifted up two more tries as Dwyer claimed his second and elusive winger Maurice Logue grabbed his eighth of the season in the closing minutes to seal a fifth win and seventh bonus point for Carlow.
