Munsters go top at the Well - Div 2 round-up
Young Munster leapfrogged Old Belvedere into pole position in AIB League Division Two this evening as their 23-22 victory over bottom-placed Sundays Well handed them their fourth win in five games.
Elsewhere Belvedere succumbed 27-19 to Thomond, Barnhall kept up the pace with their fourth success 16-13 at home to Old Crescent and promotion-chasing capital sides Dublin University and Terenure also enjoyed wins.
After their 58-0 defeat at the hands of UL Bohemians a forthnight ago, Well had something to prove at Musgrave Park, but they were 7-0 down early on after a David O’Dwyer try, converted by Brian Murphy.
Six minutes later, that was all forgotten as a Rory Caroll pass released Well’s inside centre Sakoma Chirwa down the blindside and the former Clanwilliam man sprinted 40 metres to the line for their opener, with Jono Lynch just falling short with the conversion.
Murphy’s 23rd minute penalty for Munsters was cancelled out by a Lynch effort before a converted breakaway score from Alan Browne on the cusp of half time, gave the visitors a 17-8 advantage.
The Limerick side went 12 points up with another Murphy penalty. Well hooker Fintan Whelan slipped in for their second try on 52 minutes, converted by Lynch to cut that deficit to five, but Murphy was again on hand to kick the visitors clear into a 23-15 lead, with two scores crucially between the sides.
That was to prove the difference despite a wonderful team try on the hour mark from Well.
