All Blacks secure bonus point

New Zealand 42, Canada 6 (latest)

All Blacks number eight Rodney So’oialo scored his first two Test tries as New Zealand overcame a spirited opening from Canada to secure a bonus by half-time in Melbourne.

The Canadians kept New Zealand at bay for 17 minutes but once Caleb Ralph finished off a trademark breakaway try, New Zealand began to turn the screw.

So’oialo touched down for a second and then secured the bonus point four minutes before half-time, with Mils Muliaina scoring his first All Blacks try inbetween.

Ralph’s score was New Zealand’s 100th in Rugby World Cup history – and it was not long before Rodney So’oialo made it 101.

It was created by a scything run from Nonu, showing the attacking skills Umaga feels will make him a star of this tournament, before he fed MacDonald bursting through.

He was stopped just inches from the line and though Fyffe flicked it back, the All Blacks retained possession and So’oialo barged over for his first Test try under the posts.

There was a first for Muliaina too after a magnificent step from MacDonald sent Canada’s John Cannon sprawling.

The New Zealand full-back burst through the gap, floated a chip over and Muliaina, playing his first Test on the wing, chased it down to score as the All Blacks began to turn the screw.

Lacking the necessary organisation even in attack, Canada were then stung four minutes before the interval after surrendering a turnover on the New Zealand 22.

Number eight So’oialo sent a raking miss-pass to Carter who broke through the Canadians’ ragged defence before handing on to Spencer.

With the Canada defence heavily outnumbered, Spencer had plenty of options but delayed his pass back inside until So’oialo came bursting through to run unhindered to seal the All Blacks a bonus point.

Winger Muliaina completed his hat-trick with tries in the 45th and 49th minutes as the All Blacks began to romp home.

Carter again converted both tries - making him the World Cup's leading scorer - while Jared Barker landed penalties in the first-half and on 52 minutes to take Canada's score to six.
