Uruguay confident of causing upset

Uruguay believe they can learn the lessons of their World Cup mauling by South Africa and turn it into a positive performance against Samoa at Subiaco Oval later today.

’Los Teros’ were crushed 72-6 by the Springboks, a result that suggests they will also struggle to contain the South Sea Islanders.

But the Uruguayans, whose line-up shows five changes from last weekend, including first tournament starts for half-backs Bernardo Amarillo and Juan Campomar, are optimistic about their chances.

“We were mentally prepared for South Africa, but physically, probably not,” said Uruguay’s assistant coach Paul Healy.

“We are looking forward to the Samoan game, and hopefully we’ve learnt a lot from the South African match.

“If, against Samoa, we can cut down the errors, then who knows what can happen. If we play well against Samoa, then I think we can take points off them.”

A solid-looking Samoan side includes Gloucester centre Terry Fanolua, former Richmond fly-half Earl Va’a, Orrell’s Steven So’oialo and the 31-year-old ex-Swansea and Stade Francais wing Brian Lima.

And for Lima, it promises to be a special week, with his wife Sima expecting their third child back home in Apia on Friday.

Because of Samoa’s busy World Cup schedule though, he won’t be able to return for the birth.
