Edinburgh progress in Celtic Cup

Edinburgh 33 Cardiff 16

Edinburgh produced a tremendous display of counter-attacking to send Cardiff crashing out of the Celtic Cup at Meadowbank.

The Welshmen were in control at the start – only to surrender the initiative to the more hungry home troops.

Cardiff had opened up a 10-0 lead with a penalty by Nick Robinson, who then goaled Ken Fourie’s try.

Then Edinburgh came alive with a score by Marcus di Rollo, converted by Brendan Laney – only for Robinson to kick his second penalty following a fine surge featuring Craig Morgan.

Edinburgh snatched the initiative in a dramatic finale to the half with touchdowns by prop Allan Jacobsen and Tom Philip.

Cardiff came back into the picture with another Robinson penalty following a ruck offence.

But the Gunners ran away with it. Joel Brannigan bagged their next try and Laney ignored the strengthening wind to confidently bang over the kick from a tricky angle.

Cardiff’s plight deepened when Craig Morgan and Gareth Williams were sin-binned.

And the contest was well and truly over when scrum-half Rory Lawson darted over for Ally Warnock to convert.
