Broncos search for 'Prop Idol'

League side London Broncos have copied the format of television’s popular music talent shows to launch their own search for a star of the future.

The club’s new “Prop Idol” competition will offer the winner a full-time contract for the 2003 season after a series of trials across the United Kingdom.

Regional heats will be held on January 12 and 13 with the final taking place a fortnight later. The club also hope the scheme will raise awareness of the sport.

Broncos chief executive Nic Cartwright said: “There are sure to be people across the country who are itching for the chance to show they could make it in a professional capacity – and we are only too glad to give them this opportunity.

“Anyone who thinks they are fast enough, strong enough, and committed enough, should step up to the mark – whether they have played rugby before, or not.”

Regional heats for the event, which will be sponsored by Tetley’s, will be held in Coventry, Nottingham, London, Hemel Hempstead, Leeds, Belfast, Bristol and Liverpool. The club are hoping up to 2,000 contestants will take part.
