South Africa boss condemns referee attack
South African rugby authorities have condemned the attack on Irish referee David McHugh during the Tri-Nations Test between New Zealand and South Africa this afternoon.
In a strongly-worded statement issued by South Africa Rugby managing director Rian Oberholzer, the attack was described as deplorable.
“This kind of behaviour does not belong at any rugby Test match,” the statement read.
Oberholzer called on South African rugby spectators to behave responsibly.
“Those who support the Springboks, and indeed rugby, should know that they should behave responsibly and with respect, most especially towards referees, the players and other spectators.”
South Africa Rugby also issued an apology on behalf of its supporters to McHugh.
The incident took place two minutes into the second half when 46-year-old Pieter van Zyl slipped the security cordon around the field and tackled McHugh.
Several players came to the rescue of the referee who was later carried off by medical treatment to a dislocated shoulder.
South Africa Rugby confirmed that Van Zyl, from Potchfstroom, was taken into custody and that he would be charged.
All Black captain Reuben Thorne said the attack came out of the blue.
“We were completely surprised but I think the players handled it well.”
