Six Nations Rugby: Johnson free to play against France
Martin Johnson is free to play for England in Saturday's Six Nations clash against France in Paris.
The England captain was banned for three weeks for punching Saracens hooker Robbie Russell.
But Johnson's club Leicester subsequently appealed against the jurisdiction of the hearing, and Twickenham confirmed that the appeal will not be heard this week.
Under Rugby Football Union disciplinary rules, Johnson is therefore free to continue playing until the hearing takes place.
England boss Clive Woodward is scheduled to name his side for the Stade de France showdown, and it now looks as though Johnson will lead his country for a 23rd time and win his 66th cap.
The RFU statement said: "Further to discussions between the RFU president Roy Manock and the RFU disciplinary officer Robert Horner over the weekend it can be confirmed that the appeal relating to Martin Johnson will not be heard this week.
"A date will be set as soon as possible. Until the appeal takes place Martin Johnson is free to play for Leicester Tigers and England.
Roy Manock added: 'Under the appeal process the appointment of the panel rests with me. I have identified a shortlist of people who I think will be suitable and the aim is for the panel to be chaired by a person independent of the RFU.
"The RFU Secretary will be checking on their availability and will be arranging a date and venue. The RFU and Martin Johnson will also be preparing their cases for the appeal.
"As a result of these logistical considerations it has not been possible to hold the appeal this week but we expect to announce the date for it shortly."
