Six Nations: Metcalfe wants controls after socks' loss
Glenn Metcalfe wants more stewards at international matches following the pitch invasion after Scotland’s win against Italy in Rome.
The kilted Kiwi was almost stripped of his jersey and lost his socks to Italian fans following the 29-12 Lloyds TSB Six Nations victory at the Stadio Flaminio.
Team-mate Brendan Laney was slapped in the face by one supporter after he refused to hand over his top and Chris Paterson was also targeted by home fans, who poured onto the pitch after the game.
Metcalfe believes more stewards should be introduced to ensure the safety of both fans and players.
He said: ‘‘It wasn’t a real big deal for me - the hardest part was just getting back to the changing room.
‘‘It’s just the fact that you have to push through people because you don’t want to use force to get off the park.
‘‘If there are stewards around they might be able to keep it more at bay.
‘‘I certainly didn’t feel threatened but they may have to look at it and have people around to be seen to be doing something.’’
