Rugby: Make-or-break for Llanelli in Heineken Cup

Llanelli face a make-or-break Heineken Cup mission when they tackle Leicester.

But Scarlets coach Gareth Jenkins is hoping that the Stradey Park factor can help his team secure a memorable win.

Llanelli's famous old ground - scene of unforgettable past glories against New Zealand and Australia - will be packed to its 10,800 capacity for Leicester's visit.

Heineken Cup history books also confirm what a fortress it can be, with only Gloucester and Leinster having lowered Llanelli's colours during 17 European ties on home soil.

Llanelli know that victory should secure a quarter-final place as one of two best runners-up, even though it might mean a trip to Leicester in the last eight, especially if Tigers end the group stage as top seeds.

And Jenkins believes that a bumper, partisan home crowd can play its part in plotting the reigning European champions' downfall.

"It's Wales against England, and hopefully the intense atmosphere of a packed Stradey Park will be a shock to the system for the Tigers, and give us an edge," Jenkins said.

But he is also realistic about the size of Llanelli's challenge against the Pool One winners, adding: "Leicester are the most feared and respected side in Europe.

"We are a proud club though, and we know that our destiny is in our own hands. We also have a good try-count in our favour."

Injury worries Salesi Finau (back) and prop Martyn Madden (shoulder) have both been named in a Llanelli side captained by inspirational Lions and Wales number eight Scott Quinnell.

Leicester are minus the suspended Austin Healey, yet Tigers' Australian centre Rod Kafer senses that the Premiership leaders will relish their task.

"It has been noticeable this week that there is tension in the team," he said.

"It is the first time in quite some time that we've had people really on edge, and that is a good thing because it lifts everyone up a little bit more."
