Rugby: Gordon Brown factfile

1947 - Born: November 1 in Troon, Scotland.

Son of former Scotland goalkeeper Jock and younger brother of international lock forward Peter.

Commonly known as ‘Broon frae Troon’, Brown combines his day job as a building society manager with playing club rugby for local side Marr and Glasgow-based West of Scotland.

1969 - Makes his Scotland debut against South Africa at Murrayfield, a 6-3 win which remains his country’s last victory over the Springboks.

1971 - Selected for the British Lions tour to New Zealand. Starts alongside Willie John McBride in the second-row for the 13-3 third Test win in Wellington. Retains his place for the fourth Test as the Lions record a 2-1 series win.

1974 - Chosen for the British Lions tour to South Africa. Plays in the first three Tests, with the tourists winning all three, again alongside Willie John McBride. Scores a try in the second Test in Pretoria and the third in Port Elizabeth.

1976 - Makes his 30th and final appearance for Scotland in the 15-6 Five Nations victory over Ireland at Lansdowne Road.

1977 - Goes on his third successive Lions trip and plays in the second Test win over Australia alongside Bill Beaumont. Suffers defeat in a Lions jersey for the first time in the third Test but retains his place for the fourth, when the tourists are beaten 10-9.

2001 - Died, March 19, leaving a wife Linda and children Mardi and Rory.
