Macqueen confirms summer resignation

Australian rugby union coach Rod Macqueen has confirmed he will resign from the role in August, paving the way for a possible handover period with his successor.

"Around that time would be suitable . . . I've always said that would be the obvious time considering we have to go to the World Cup," explained Macqueen.

"We are just finalizing exactly the time and what is right for Australian rugby. I'm certainly happy to do that (have a handover period) if that's what the board wants."

Macqueen returned from a laws of rugby conference in Argentina, encouraged that International Rugby Board members would not pass laws that would stifle free-flowing attack this international season.

There was talk that northern hemisphere IRB members would push for a major tightening of obstruction laws, preventing many of the backline moves Australia has implemented under Macqueen over the past two years.

But Macqueen said he was confident that only minor changes would be made when the IRB meets next month to determine what new rugby rules come into effect.

"There'll obviously be some changes in the breakdown rule so it's easier for spectators to know what's going on but I think everyone was of the opinion that we want to continue being positive," Macqueen said.

"The pleasing thing from my point of view is that everyone had an open mind and the general consensus was that the game is in great shape."

Macqueen said George Gregan would be a front-runner to take over from John Eales as Australian captain.

"John (Eales) has done a wonderful job but I'm certainly happy with the leadership we have in the side," he said. "I think George will get some experience in the role this year and Australia is looking good with the options that they've got."
