Ireland has perfect timing for RWC 2023

Ireland’s hopes of securing hosting rights for the 2023 Rugby World Cup were given a boost yesterday when the chief executive of World Rugby (formerly the IRB) indicated that the tournament is likely to end up in, or near, Dublin’s time zone.

The hosting of the competition has traditionally swung between Europe and the three southern hemisphere giants since its establishment in 1987, but the decision to award the rights to Japan in 2019 has interrupted that pattern.

South Africa is two hours ahead of GMT, which would suit TV companies and sponsors in the key European market, while France is just 60 minutes ahead. Both countries are believed to be contemplating bids.
