Fitzgerald steps up for Pres again

Munster Junior Cup: Presentation Brothers College flanker Cian Fitzgerald must be breaking some kind of schools record at the Mardyke today when he lines out in the Munster Schools Junior Cup clash with Castletroy College (kick-off 3pm).

Fitzgerald is in his fourth year playing at this grade having been deemed good enough to make his junior debut off the bench four years ago. Since then he has featured on one winning cup team, helping Pres to a 29th title last season.

He will be in good company today with a couple of that winning team: Billy Scannell who captains the team from the hooking position and out-half James Broderick who won his medal from centre last season. Scannell is younger brother of both Niall and Rory who have been picked up by Munster since leaving school.

PBC spokesman Caleb Sheehan is expecting tough opposition from Castletroy this afternoon. The sides played out a draw before Christmas and Pres sneaked a three-point win in a second clash between the teams.

“I suppose you get some idea from those matches but of course it isn’t cup rugby when you play friendly matches. We will go into the game with huge respect for Castletroy. We expect not to be given anything easy,” said Sheehan.
