Briggs: We have nothing to fear in World Cup
The draw takes place in host nation France this morning (10.30am) with Ireland among the 12 qualifiers for the global showpiece.
Niamh Briggs, who kicked all six points in Ireland’s win in Milan last March — the game which clinched the Grand Slam — insists the side have nothing to fear.
“We have this spirit in Ireland that we speak about a lot, this togetherness and we don’t fear anyone.
“Obviously every match at international level is tough, but we enjoy playing together and every time we put on the green jersey it’s an honour we cherish.”
It was announced last week Ireland will play England in the Six Nations after the men’s game in Twickenham on February 22. Briggs maintains this is an important development in women’s rugby.
“It’s fantastic to be able to play somewhere like Twickenham — the Holy Grail of English rugby.
“It’s where you want to be when you’re young and starting out.
“It’s a sign of where women’s rugby is going. It’s free in and you don’t need an extra ticket so we hope to encourage people to stay afterwards.”
At 29, Briggs is one of the most experienced players in the Irish team and the full back is aware of what is required ahead of the World Cup.
“It’s a massive year for us. We have to develop and introduce players. It’s a challenge we are all very excited about.
“The World Cup is going to be brilliant. France always bring massive crowds.
“As I come to the end of my career, it’s something I’ll cherish. Hopefully I can stay fit and get picked in the squad.”
