No resting on laurels as Doyle targets Grand Slam
And women’s coach Philip Doyle is holding faith in the same side that secured that maiden title for the team. It’s been a remarkable rise for the team and the game itself — which only found its feet in this country in 1993 but has been growing ever since.
“It is great to have our goals already reached for this season with Rugby World Cup qualifications and the Triple Crown secured,” he said.
“That being said, this squad has further goals and a win over France will certainly get us a step closer to those.”
Tomorrow night’s meeting with the French in Ashbourne at 7.30pm is the latest obstacle in the way of the side that has shown flashes of brilliance in their opening games. But Doyle has reviewed France’s previous performances and is expecting a big challenge.
“Having seeing France’s very strong performance a fortnight ago, we know that this fixture will be a very tight one but will certainly be very entertaining for the crowd.
“We are looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd in Ashbourne. They always give us great support and can really make a difference for the team on the pitch.”
The game will be streamed live on www.IrishRugby.ie and on www.rte.ie with a commentary team that includes former Women’s international Fiona Steed while 2FM will have live commentary from Michael Corcoran and former Ireland international Rosie Foley.
Meanwhile Mike Ruddock has welcomed back Stuart Olding and Conor Joyce from RaboDirect Pro12 duty with Ulster for the Ireland U20s clash with France in Dubarry Park tomorrow.
“We have a tough battle on our hands against a strong French team. They have recalled a number of players with Heineken Cup experience,” said Ruddock.
“We need to reproduce our valiant effort we showed against England.”
