Clonmel chance to close on leaders

IT is back to business in Division 1of the Munster Junior League while the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield final is also down for decision.

Clonmel chance to close on leaders

Last weekend saw Galbally go top of Division 1 courtesy of a bonus-point win over Thurles in the only match. They won’t be in action this time out as their game at Crosshaven has been postponed until November 27.

There are several clubs right behind them and they will all be bidding to keeping their title bids going. Clonmel have been one of the most impressive sides so far and former UL Bohemian star Ben Martin has been an asset both on the playing field and as a coach. They also have other young talented players with Pierce Byrne and Frankie Quinlan both catching the eye.

The Tipperary side will be expected to win this week as they host Kanturk, but can certainly not take the north Cork side for granted after they have made a strong start to life in the top flight.

They possess a powerful pack and will be looking to target Clonmel up front. Clonmel possess plenty of talent around the field and should have enough experience to win out.

Skibbereen are joint second with Clonmel on 12 points and will be looking to add at least another four points to their tally as they travel to St Senan’s. Skibb have always been a strong performer in the league without ever seriously challenging but they have an excellent blend to their team this year.

Peter Mihaere and John Sullivan have got off to excellent starts while the reliable boot of David Shannon has being key.

After struggling last season, St Senan's have made some quality additions with Fernando Gallant proving to be a threat. He has added some finishing skills to supplement their strong pack. With the game at home, the Clare side should start as favourites and could leapfrog the west Cork side.

It has been a good start for Waterpark with two wins and a draw and their young side look set to improve as the year progresses. They face a tough trip to Old Christians where their title credentials will be seriously tested. The Rathcooney outfit will be aiming to bounce back from two successive defeats. If Waterpark can withstand the pressure from the opposing forward, they possess enough quality out wide that could help them snatch a victory.

After a severe hammering by Galbally, Thurles will hope a return to their home ground may give them some solace as they face Clanwilliam. Thurles did put in a strong showing in their previous home game against Skibbereen but with so many key players from recent seasons not available for them, it is likely that the Tipperary town side will get the win.

Three sides will be looking to bounce back from defeats in the All Ireland Cup. Tralee host Richmond with the sides suffering different type of losses in the national competition.

The Limerick side came very close to overcoming Academy while Tralee were overwhelmed by Coolmine. Tralee have yet to produce the form of the past couple of years and Richmond should take the spoils.

Kilfeacle were well beaten when they took on Tullamore and still have some key players out. They will find it difficult to get their season on track as they travel to a Cobh side who have played some excellent rugby so far.

Charleville will host the Challenge Shield Final as Newcastle West take on Presentation. The Rathuard club have proved to be a force at the higher level in Division Two with Mark Phair and Kevin Donnellan inspiring them to an unbeaten start in provincial competitions which included a 19-6 league victory over this weekend’s opponents.

Newcastle West will be seeking revenge and certainly have the capability.
