Shannon honour club great Frankie

SHANNON RFC have unveiled a painting to commemorate the memory of club great, Frankie O’Flynn, who died in 2008.

The work by renowned local artist Jim O’Farrell is entitled ‘Are we right lads’ and will be on display in the main hall of Shannon’s clubhouse in Thomond Park.

O’Farrell said: “I knew Frankie well for a long number of years and to say that to be asked to paint his portrait was an honour would be a mild understatement.

“He was a gentle man of the highest degree and, thankfully, he will never be forgotten.”

A club spokesperson explained: “This is the first time that Shannon RFC has commissioned a painting of any member. This unveiling was the highlight of our recent club evening with Frankie’s widow Violet and members of her family were in attendance.

“Frankie will be best remembered the length and breath of the county and indeed beyond for his singing, and the painting is of Frankie carrying out the duty he so loved, singing The Isle. It’s a moment in time that Jim O’Farrell has exquisitely captured with his wonderful talent.”

The evening also honoured the side which claimed Shannon’s first Munster Senior Cup win in 1960 while John Galvin was named Club Person of the Year.
