Foley on fire as CBC overwhelm local rivals

POWERED by an inspirational performance from scrum-half Ryan Foley, CBC overwhelmed defending champions PBC to claim their place in the semi-finals of the Avonmore Milk Munster Schools Junior Cup in an entertaining quarter-final clash at Temple Hill yesterday.

Foley, who was decisive, quick and accurate at the back of the scrum, was never far from the action. He opened the scoring with a well-struck penalty after five minutes, combined with full-back, Cillian Monaghan, and winger, Adam Finn, to set up Rory Burke’s try after 10 minutes.

He then landed his second penalty before Tommy Duggan opened PBC’s account with a penalty after 27 minutes.

And he was again involved in the final frantic three minutes before half-time.

After fishing the ball from a ruck, he spun it out to Jack Whooley who in turn fed the ball back to Finn on the blindside. Finn then sent over Chris McAuliffe for their second try and sent them into the break leading 16-3.

Foley kicked another penalty three minutes into the second half before CBC were pushed back into their own half. PBC were eventually rewarded when, after the CBC prop Rory Burke was yellow carded, they won the ball against the head and flanker Michael Murphy crashed over for a try which out-half Tommy Duggan converted on 18 minutes.

The try spurred CBC back into action and again it was Foley who did the damage. CBC pushed Pres back a ruck formed just short of the line and again Foley snatched the ball from the base and crashed over for a try.

Now they were coasting and when Foley kicked for the left corner, Chris McAuliffe was first up to the ball for his second try which Foley converted from a difficult angle.

Foley’s brilliance eclipsed some other fine performances throughout the field. Monaghan was rock solid under the high ball, while Darragh Moloney and Tadhg Arigan did well in the line-outs against Martin Curtin and Aidan Lynch who were excellent for Pres.
