Irish and English legends to line out for charity

SHANE BYRNE will lead an Ireland Legends rugby team against the England Legends at The Stoop in Twickenham on the eve of Ireland-England Six Nations game.

The Legends game was planned to raise funds for Stuart Mangan from Fermoy, paralysed in a rugby accident while playing for Hammersmith & Fulham RFC in April 2008.

Following the accident he required 24-hour medical care and The Stuart Mangan Appeal was launched to support this with a list of illustrious patrons including Keith Wood, Ronan O’Gara and Jason Leonard.

Sadly Stuart passed away last August after contracting pneumonia but his family want the match to go ahead in his memory to raise funds to support other injured players.

The charities to benefit from the game are Keith Woods’ Paralysed Rugby Players’ Fund, the Matt Hampson Trust and the IRFU Charitable Trust.

England player, Matt Hampson suffered a similar accident to Stuart while training with England U-21s and provided friendship and support to the Fermoy man.

Among those joining Shane Byrne on the Ireland team will be Reggie Corrigan, Victor Costello, Derek McAleese, Maurice Field, John O’Neill, Justin Bishop and the evergreen Rob Henderson, a 2001 Lion who is still playing club rugby.

The England Legends will be led by former captain, Martin Corry and will include several members of the 2003 World Cup winning team. England’s most-capped player, Jason Leonard will return to his former home ground to play alongside other 2003 stars, Josh Lewsey, Paul Grayson, Mark Regan and Dorian West as well as more recent internationals like Tim Stimpson, Darren Garforth, Garath Archer, Phil Greening and Nick Greenstock.

It is hoped that Irish fans travelling to Twickenham for the Six Nations international will take in the game which is sponsored by the Byrne Group and ValidusRe and support three very worthy charities.

Tickets can be purchased (£10 for adults and £5 for kids) at www.englandirelandlegends.co.uk where there is also information on the teams and Corporate Hospitality contacts.
