Crescent face Limerick rivals St Munchin’s in the semi-final on Saturday week but will have to improve on yesterday’s performance if they are to progress.
Glenstal dominated play and had many scoring opportunities however, they failed because they had no straight, direct runner in midfield and too many of their attacks were lateral and they invariably ran out of space.
Furthermore, they were unfortunate that out-half Luke Bradley was off target with a couple of penalty attempts from kickable range and in the end there was scant reward for the endeavours of outstanding blind side flanker Tom Ryan and second rows Gerald Quinn and Kevin Prendergast.
Ultimately Crescent claimed a merited victory given they grasped their chance when it came and they also defended skilfully and bravely. In this respect, none did better than number eight Jack Dineen and prop Jack Sheehan while Diarmuid Dee in the centre also impressed.
Glenstal had the wind at their backs in the first half and were on top territorially but all they had to show for their efforts was a Bradley penalty in the 22nd minute.
They retained the initiative on the turnover but were punished for their frailty in the Crescent red zone when the siege was lifted and play switched to the other end of the pitch. Crescent won a good ruck in front of the posts, switched play swiftly to the left where a well-timed pass by Jack Sheehan sent Mulcair in for a fine try.
Glenstal recovered well from the setback and put the Crescent line under pressure. It was then the winners, defence was at its best and they held out gamely to qualify for the last four.
