Walsh hoping new faces will deliver
This is the third in the series of matches involving players who don’t or have never had a professional contract and, naturally enough, it is hugely popular with those whose ambitions don’t go beyond representing their clubs over the weekend while holding down a day job for the rest of the time.
This is a relatively inexperienced Irish side, with nine new caps. Teamwork, or rather the lack of it, could pose a problem for Walsh given that 11 clubs are represented, with Cork Constitution, Clontarf, Lansdowne and Dolphin providing two players each. Cronan Healy of Con and Dolphin’s Barry Keeshan were part of the side that defeated England last season before losing 18-11 to tonight’s opposition in Edinburgh. Front-row forwards Damien Varley of Garryowen and prop Simon Shawe were also members of the 2007 squad and the side is captained by Lansdowne second-row Alan Maher.
