Carroll drives ’Well to victory as Crescent’s late heroics fail

SUNDAY’S WELL creaked a bit in the closing stages, but they were still worthy winners of a well-contested ODM Munster Senior Cup quarter-final at Musgrave Park on Saturday.

A brace of late tries gave Old Crescent a lifeline, but the home side held out to earn a semi-final place in Cork against Highfield.

Sunday’s Well, so close to dropping out of the senior ranks last season, have clearly made progress, and the performance of their pack suggests they will be a match for most sides.

Arguably, the man of the match was Old Crescent flanker Lemiki Vaipula, but even he wasn’t enough to stop the Ian Carroll-driven ‘Well dominating.

If Brian Begley always posed a threat for the visitors, and even if Gareth James (try) put his side into the lead after nine minutes, Sunday’s Well refused to panic.

Of course, it didn’t help that James had a poor return from goal-kicking chances, but Sunday’s Well still clawed their way back into the game and then bounced into an impressive lead.

John Lynch got them off the mark with a 13th-minute penalty goal and Tilla Toaliloa put them in front with a 26th minute try that Lynch converted.

The power of the Sunday’s Well pack was highlighted on the stroke of half time when they mauled their way from a line-out and Jason Rose was adjudged to have got the crucial touch over the Crescent line. A 15-5 lead was no less than Sunday’s Well deserved.

The second-half performance was a little less impressive, but after a lot of huffing and puffing, they finally produced a match-winning move. Lynch went in for the all-important try after several players had contributed to a remarkable attacking movement in the 68th minute.

Alan Purcell responded quickly with a 71st minute try for Crescent, and Begley skipped in for an injury time try that James converted.

Referee Trevor Collins allowed two minutes of added time, and Sunday’s Well lived dangerously as they guarded their three-point lead. They just about did enough in the end.
