Tralee to celebrate 125th anniversary
There will be little shortage of legendary names and faces either.
Former Tánaiste Dick Spring is one of the club’s most famous sons and is expected to join over 300 guests to recount glory days of one of Munster’s oldest clubs.
Though the likes of Arthur Townsend, John Curneen and Der O’Sullivan are acclaimed players from the past, the success stories aren’t confined to history.
John O’Sullivan, son of Der, is part of Declan Kidney’s Munster squad while Danny Barnes and Sean O’Mahoney have won caps with the youth’s international side.
Secretary Grace O’Donnell explained the reason for the event: “We would be one of the oldest clubs in Munster along with Bandon. So we decided that we would mark the year with different events. We had a variety show involving members of the club of all ages which was a huge success in January. We have a sports lunch in June where we hope to have a panel of speakers and a celebrity at each table; there’s a gala dress dance in October and a ladies fashion show in November.”
“This event is a reunion of past players and officers and we are expecting between 300 and 400 people. There has been a brilliant response. Things like this are a great way to give people who have been away for a few years, a chance to get back to Tralee.”
Rugby in Tralee is undergoing something of a renaissance thanks to the Munster’s European adventures over the past decade.
Continued O’Donnell: “We have between 250 and 300 playing on a Saturday morning from five to U18. We have two men’s teams, a girls tag team and a ladies team. The club has grown from strength to strength in the last couple of years which is a great achievement given the strength of GAA in Tralee along with soccer and basketball. Hopefully we will continue to grow and grow.’’
Tickets can be purchased from the Grand Hotel or from Grace O’Donnell at 087 2399940.
