Coach scents another upset as Italians go for hat-trick of wins

ITALY coach Pierre Berbizier is hoping for another upset in this afternoon’s RBS 6 Nations clash with Ireland in Rome.

The Italians go into the encounter at the Stadio Flaminio on the back of two precious wins against Scotland and Wales.

“There’s a French expression that says there’s not two without three,” said Berbizier.

“This is a good opportunity for us to show that we can play at a high level. This game is important for our fans but it’s also important for our players and Italian rugby.”

The absence of experienced flanker Mauro Bergamasco, who is suspended, and injured duo Andrea Lo Cicero and Gonzalo Canale is a blow for the Azzurri.

However, Berbizier prefers to look at the positives.

“This is the reality we face,” he said. “But I have full confidence in my players. Those who will step on the pitch will give everything they have to help the team.”

Berbizier is aware of the challenge his team face against an Ireland side who travel to Rome with the title to play for.

“They will try to get as many points as they can against us,” he said. “But that’s their problem.

“Our main weapon on Saturday will be to play our game and give everything we’ve got, as we have done in our past games.

“Ireland is a very strong team, they have individual and collective talent.

“We know the only way we can upset them is if we play at the top of our game and they are not as strong as in other games.”

The Azzurri will be boosted by an enthusiastic crowd, with the Stadio Flaminio sold out for Saturday’s game.

“It’s going to be a good atmosphere,” said Berbizier. “We just hope the game is a celebration of rugby and that the fans enjoy themselves.”
