Irish women cruise to historic victory over Scots

THE Irish women’s rugby team made history in Edinburgh on Saturday by beating Scotland for the first time in the Six Nations series.

Captain Sarah Jane Belton, Jeanette Feighery and Lynne Cantwell were the try scorers with Jo O’Sullivan contributing a penalty in the 18-6 win.

O’Sullivan opened the scoring after ten minutes but Scotland quickly equalised through the boot of Lynsey Harley.

On the half hour mark, Cantwell forced a turnover and the ball was recycled to Belton who crashed over for Ireland’s opening try.

Scotland kept in touch with another Harley penalty but the hosts were struggling to contain the rampant visitors and shortly afterwards Feighery touched down for Ireland’s second try.

Feighery was unlucky not to add to her tally but the relentless pressure told when Cantwell got through to score.

Ireland face Italy in their final game of the competition next weekend.
