Henson won’t be distracted by social life, insists Jenkins

WALES head coach Gareth Jenkins insists that Gavin Henson can dance the night away as often as he likes — providing his rugby does not suffer.

Henson won’t be distracted by social life, insists Jenkins

Henson was recently photographed after a night on the town with girlfriend Charlotte Church during a mid-season break to the French ski resort of Chamonix.

Henson’s lifestyle has often come under scrutiny but Jenkins defended the 24-year-old and insisted his off-field activities are of no concern.

“Gavin is fine. I haven’t talked to him about anything other than his rugby,” said Jenkins.

“Gavin is full of confidence. He is not only a good dancer and good drinker, he also carries a lot of confidence around his rugby.

“We know his ability and as long as outside distractions don’t detract from what I want or what the team wants from him then that’s all right.”

Henson will play at full-back for the Ospreys this weekend following a request from Jenkins, which is a clear indication where he could feature against Ireland in the opening RBS 6 Nations game on February 4.

Wales are without Mark Jones and Shane Williams, which could force regular full-back options Gareth Thomas and Kevin Morgan onto the wings.

And Jenkins all but confirmed that James Hook will start at inside centre, a week on Sunday.

“Gavin has played very effectively for Wales before in the 15 jersey. It won’t faze him,” said Jenkins.

“If it gives him the opportunity to play for Wales I am sure he will be delighted.”

Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll expects to be facing Henson at the Millennium Stadium and believes he would pose a different, but no less considerable, threat from full-back.

“They want Gavin in the team, he’s got a sizeable boot which can punish you and he can also be a threatening runner,” said O’Driscoll.

“They want the best players in the side and Gavin fits into that category. He’s a good player who can play in a lot of positions.”
