Humphrey’s league winner in Cardiff will go down in history
Northern Ireland Office Sports Minister Maria Eagle paid tribute to Mark McCall’s side at a special reception in Stormont’s Parliament Buildings marking last season’s Celtic League victory.
Former Ireland out-half David Humphreys clinched the title in a nail biting 19-17 away victory over the 2004/5 champions Neath-Swansea Ospreys, in Cardiff.
Guests were told by Ms Eagle: “The image of the ball flying between the posts from the boot is one of the greatest sporting moments in Northern Ireland’s illustrious sporting history.
“Following on from the success in 1999 when the team won the European Cup and in 2003 when they won the Celtic Cup, Cardiff was another proud summit for the team.”
The minister highlighted the important role of the Sports Institute for Northern Ireland in developing new talent.
And she also pledged the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure support for the development of the sport.
“My department and the Sports Council will continue to work closely with Ulster rugby in further developing the sport, including the ... redevelopment of Ravenhill Park,” the minister said.
“This will not only provide increased accommodation ... but will more importantly enhance the safety and comfort of spectators at future events.”
She added: “Can I wish the Ulster team all the best for this year’s competition and the defence of their trophy.”
