Settled Maggs aiming to keep Ulster’s run going
Last season, Maggs found it difficult to settle in the province after years playing in the west country with Bath and his native Bristol.
Now he seems more settled after the birth of his daughter Jessica.
“This has been a more settled year for me, and I feel that I’m playing with a lot more confidence,” said Maggs. “It was difficult last year, but things are great now and getting back to what I was used to.
“Obviously playing in a winning team helps. Winning games away from home is a bonus and has given us confidence. Hopefully we can keep that trend going,” said Maggs.
“We know it is going to be difficult to go to the Borders and get a victory.
“They have the best defensive record in the league and we’re going to have to step it up again if we are to get what we want there. But everyone in the squad is enjoying training and playing, so are looking forward to the next big challenge ahead of the Heineken Cup, and a win tonight will expand the confidence even more.”
Meanwhile, Borders introduce Calum MacRae at full-back for Stuart Moffat, while in the front-row Bruce Douglas has recovered from a foot problem and returns for Tom McGee. In the back-row Kelly Brown moves to No 8 as Semo Sititi has had to head home briefly to Samoa through a family bereavement. Andy Rennick will start at blindside flanker and Andy Miller at openside flanker instead of Wayne McEntee.
