Munster disappointed as Keogh opts for Leinster

MUNSTER forward Stephen Keogh did not travel to Wales yesterday for the Celtic League clash with Llanelli after agreeing a new two year contract with Leinster.

Munster manager Jerry Holland said he was "very disappointed" at Keogh's decision, as it emerged that he was offered similar terms to Leinster. Said Holland: "While we are very disappointed that Stephen has opted to leave, we respect his decision and wish him all the best for the future."

Keogh had played in 10 of Munster's 15 Celtic League games this season captaining the side against Cardiff Blues - and also being involved in four of their six Heineken Cup pool matches.

Leinster chief executive Mick Dawson admitted to being: "delighted to sign a player of Stephen's calibre after successfully competing for his signature with a number of overseas clubs. Given the gap soon to be felt by Eric Miller's retirement, it was important that we recruited someone of an equally high standard. Stephen is a young and aggressive player who will add greater competition to the backrow."

Leinster coach Michael Cheika added: "I'm really happy that we have secured Stephen's signature. I have seen him play this year and I have been impressed with his consistently high level of performance. I think that he will be an excellent and valuable addition to our team and he will give us a strong, competitive backrow. He is a quality player who will compete heavily at provincial level and beyond."

Keogh's decision has clearly been influenced by the level of competition for Munster back row positions, soon to be stiffened by the return of Alan Quinlan from a knee injury.

However, the Munster branch has inked new contract extensions with Ireland international David Wallace, and A internationals, Tomas O'Leary, Barry Murphy and Ian Dowling, while Shannon prop forward Tony Buckley has also agreed terms with Munster.
