Dispute between IRFU and RLU settled

THE row between the IRFU and Rugby League Ireland, over the latter’s invitation to Union players to compete in their summer competition, has been resolved.

Dispute between IRFU and RLU settled

League bosses claimed that Union officials had warned its members off participating in the summer conference, citing concerns about insurance cover and the demand on players.

However, representatives of the two organisations held a lengthy meeting on February 18 and agreement was reached. RLI will now contact union clubs nationwide once more to canvas their interest.

“We now have a working relationship between the two organisations,” said Dave Southern of RLI yesterday.

“Now if we have issues with rugby union, we can go to Phillip Browne and we can get a fair hearing and likewise if he has a concern he can come to us. So overall, things are very positive and very upbeat.

“It was a tough enough meeting but we got a result out of it. Insurance was the big issue for the IRFU.

“The IRFU quite rightly feel that it is their duty to ensure clubs know and understand the following. This is a RLI competition and nothing whatsoever to do with the IRFU.

“There are differences between our respective insurances policies with the IRFU mandatory insurance providing deeper and more extensive cover. RLI’s mandatory insurance cover is extremely cost effective at €500 (£350) and can be extended at the clubs request,” Mr Southern added.

“The IRFU have confirmed clubs are free to decide to participate or not without there being any repercussions on participant Clubs. Players and clubs play under the RL rules and are covered by RLI sourced insurance.

“It is entirely a matter for individual clubs as to whether they participate or not,” he added.
