Aghada and Mourneabbey maintained their perfect starts to this year’s Cork Credit Union Cork LGFA senior football championship on Sunday.
Last year’s Cork SFC runners-up, Aghada, made it two Group 2 wins in as many games on another weekend of high scoring across the county.
Eric Smith’s side overcame Naomh Abán 4-11 to 2-8 thanks to first half Róisín Phelan (2), Mary Leahy and Abigail Ring green flags. Brianna Smith, Rachel Leahy, Kaitlin Smith, Clare Walsh and Sarah Leahy were also on the winners’ scoresheet.
Naomh Abán’s first defeat at senior level means there is little room for error in the Ballyvourney club’s remaining group fixtures.
Despite the result, Lydia McDonagh and Róisín Lehane combined for seven points. Abbie Scannell (1-1) and Rosie Corkery (1-0) also contributed.
Elsewhere in Group 2, a low scoring West Cork derby between Castlehaven and O’Donovan Rossa went the former’s way in Union Hall.
The Haven emerged 0-7 to 1-2 winners in a championship encounter completely dominated by defences.
Éabha O'Donovan (1-1) and Sarah Hurley (0-1) were the Skibbereen club’s only scorers. Ellen Connolly, Hannah Sheehy, Maireaid O’Driscoll (0-2 each) and Shelly Daly (0-1) efforts won it for a delighted Castlehaven.
The next round of Group 2 matches sees O’Donovan Rossa looking to bounce back against Aghada. Glanmire travel to Ballyvourney to face Naomh Abán.
Kinsale caused the biggest upset of the new Cork LGFA senior championship campaign by overcoming reigning champions Éire Óg at Jack Barrett Memorial Park.
The Ovens side, making their 2026 championship debut, suffered a narrow one-point loss.
Caoimhe Horgan, Mary Claire Murphy, Jenny Murphy, Áine Kearney, Catherine Murphy and Kate Redmond scores helped Kinsale pull off a 3-14 to 3-13 victory.
On the same afternoon, Mourneabbey reaffirmed their senior championship title credentials with a powerful display to defeat Clonakilty 4-16 to 1-8.
A second consecutive victory has Mourneabbey sitting top of Group 1. Once again, Cork minor Laura Walsh starred for the North Cork side, accruing 1-7.
Former inter-county All-Ireland winner Doireann O’Sullivan added 2-2 in a game Mourneabbey’s Sarah Finnegan (1-0), Lauren Finnegan, Ciara and Roisin O’Sulivan also scored.
Cork All-Ireland Camogie senior winner, Millie Condon, was amongst at Clonakilty’s scorers.
Moira Barrett (1-1), Síofra Pattwell (0-3), Ashling Hutchings (0-2) and Katie O’Driscoll (0-1) also featured.
Éire Óg’s next outing is against an undefeated Mourneabbey while Clonakilty will look to rebound at home to St Val’s.
